Our Training Programme
The Generalist Adviser Training Programme (ATP) is a formal training programme which covers the main topic areas dealt with by advisers such as benefits, money advice, housing, employment, relationships and immigration. The ATP runs for 10 weeks, one day per week. As well as face to face, group based training, the programme includes additional e-learning modules.
During the ATP this knowledge is put into context and given practical use during Bureau Practice (supported advice sessions in one of the Edinburgh Bureaux).
It can take from 7 - 10 months to complete our training programme and acquire ‘Generalist Competence Status’.
Participation in ongoing training - both face to face and e-learning - is a requirement for all volunteer adviser roles.
Due to the time and cost to the charity in providing this high quality training we ask that volunteers are able to commit to the full training and to spend a minimum of a year advising with CAE after qualification.
Please also note that we are fortunate to receive many more applications to become a volunteer adviser than we have places. This is why we only open the application process twice a year via our Open Days.
We offer many other volunteering opportunities at CAE and you can find out more about these here.
Volunteer Adviser Recruitment
Our adviser training progamme usually runs twice per year and is preceded by a volunteer open day and application process.
Participants in the programme are required to attend taught sessions once per week for a ten week period, as well as bureau practice sessions beginning on the third week of the training programme.
We hold Open Days twice a year at our bureau in Leith. These are an opportunity for people to meet some of the staff and volunteers and learn more about volunteering at CAE.
If you are thinking of applying to become an adviser we would encourage you to come along and find out more. Information about our next open day will be available on our website and social media accounts.
